The OnePlus 12R’s third camera won’t be as useful as it should be.

The OnePlus 12R premieres next month and has been causing quite a stir lately. The company has confirmed that it will launch alongside the OnePlus 12 on January 23rd. This will be its global launch as OnePlus 12 has already launched in China. However, more OnePlus 12R specs have just been revealed as it appears the third rear camera won’t be as useful as expected.

The third OnePlus 12R camera on the back won’t be what we hoped for

A lot of data about the OnePlus 12R has already appeared. At this point we have almost all the specifications. Some details are missing and the famous traitor Max Jambor has just decided to fill in one of these gaps.

Unfortunately the third camera on the back of the OnePlus 12R will be a 2-megapixel utility module. According to the tipster, it is a 2-megapixel macro camera with a fast lens. Initially, it was rumored that the 32-megapixel telephoto lens would be discontinued with 2x optical zoom.

Of course, this telephoto lens would be much more useful. A 2 megapixel camera is generally not great, especially when it comes to a macro camera. You’ll probably deviate from this and use wide-angle or ultra-wide-angle lenses for single-lens macro photography.

2-megapixel macro cameras usually end up being underwhelming

No phone I tested for a 2-megapixel macro camera had this feature. A photo taken with it will not look good in almost all conditions. With good lighting you can take usable photos, but only that.
However, it is understood that OnePlus‘ absence is aimed at reducing costs. The OnePlus 12R will have full specs and probably a great price, so something needs to be done about it. It might be better to ignore the third camera rather than use this one.

But let’s see what exactly we get. The other two cameras look good on paper. 50 megapixel main camera (Sony IMX890 sensor) and 8 megapixel ultra wide angle camera. However, these aren’t the best camera settings on the market…This is not to be expected as it is technically a mid-range device. OnePlus 12 will be a completely different story.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 leaves OnePlus 12R. The phone is said to have a 5,500mAh battery and support 100W charging. The Arteria accessory also features a large 120 Hz display.
